Phoenix

A hybrid synth for cinematic sound design

A modern score does as much work in sound design as it does in melody. The tension under a scene is as likely to come from a detuned drone or a granular texture as from the string section. Phoenix, the new deep hybrid synthesizer from Spitfire Audio and Grammy-nominated composer and technologist BT, carries a soaring theme into a storm of cinematic sound design — composed one moment, decomposed the next, under the fingers of a single patch.

Within every note, six synthesis engines percolate and intermodulate, sharing a unified architecture and signal path — spectral wavetables, FM, sampler, 2OP FM transients, subharmonic generation and a complex noise oscillator, all breathing, undulating, evolving. Add brain-breaking cross-modulation, modulation built on the rhythmic language of BT's patented StutterEdit, and 37 bespoke effects, and this is a synth for truly intricate, cinematic sound design.

A deep sampler with rare recordings from BT and Spitfire Audio.

Alongside six synthesis engines, Phoenix carries a deep sampler loaded with 40GB of recordings chosen for movement and dynamics. Undulating, fluttering granular strings, brass in quarter-tone clusters. Dark and mystic woodwinds, plus raucous guitars, dulcimer, cimbalom, autoharp, hand bells, a music box — the far edges of the orchestral palette, paired with dramatic hits and atonal textures. The energy in this inspiring source material takes on a whole new life through Phoenix's powerful engines.

One patch, one note, and a whole film score starts to unveil itself.

About BT

BT has spent thirty years working the seam between the orchestra and the machine. Whether through film scores like Monster and The Fast and the Furious, or through tech such as his patented stutter-editing technique that began as a way to make rhythm out of anything, BT’s musical instincts push sonic boundaries. Binary Universe put a 110-piece orchestra inside a glitch record and was written for 5.1. The four hours of music he composed for the 200 speakers of Shanghai Disneyland made space itself the instrument.

Phoenix is the synth where all these instincts converge. Deep enough to take your sound design to cinematic scale – sculpted enough to compose a film score from one patch. Built for people writing to picture at three in the morning. “This is true cross-synthesis. I've spent my entire life exploring synthesis modalities – built on the back of giants, to be sure, and combined and augmented this way, none of this existed before. Not even in a related form. This is a dream inspiration engine fully realized.”
