Behind BT Phobos
Phoenix
Where Phobos transforms whatever you feed it, Phoenix builds from the ground up, and does it in stereo, with two independent synthesis chains per voice, one per channel, so detune, warp and envelope timing drift apart in real time. Wavetable, FM, sampler, transient, sub and noise share a single signal path and cross-modulate each other: a six-operator FM engine with 34 algorithms stacks up to 48 operator-oscillators into one MPE note, while modal resynthesis rebuilds any struck object as a playable instrument. Eight meta sequencers, 636 hand-made rhythm patterns and per-stage probability drive it, so a sequence can run backwards mid-note. The patch carrying your theme can dissolve into the texture beneath it.
Polaris
Where the other two build electronic sound from scratch, Polaris starts with players. A 6,6,5,4,3 string band was arranged and recorded at AIR Lyndhurst Hall in a configuration built for synth sounds (basses, celli and violas in the middle, violins spread wide left and right) performing techniques orchestrated to imitate electronic production. Those recordings were then resampled through an EMU E-II, a Fairlight, an Ensoniq Mirage and assorted cassette and VHS machines, alongside deep samples of a CS-80, Jupiter 8, Prophet 5 and Matrix 12. 129 articulations, a granular engine and 421 presets built by BT and the Spitfire team. BT Phobos
Phobos is built on a precept almost nobody has used as a synthesis engine: polyconvolution. Instead of reaching for convolution to model a reverb or an amplifier’s distortion circuit, BT made the impulse response itself tonal, then made it polyphonic, pitch-tracking and rendered in real time across three independent convolvers. Feed something rhythmic through something tonal and you get the percolating, morphing ambiences he spent years hunting while scoring. Behind it sit over 20GB of hand-built rhythms, pulses, textures and atmospheres, any of which works as source or as impulse. The result is movement and drive on demand, subtle or massive, across cues that never settle into a loop.
