introducing Haula

When I first heard Haula’s voice I was struck by the depth and intensity of her ability to infuse emotion into a performance: she has a wide vocal range and uses this to great effect in her work. She writes compelling songs with a very fresh creative feel. It’s really exciting for us to be able to help Haula to develop her skillset on the MA in Commercial Songwriting and Production at Tileyard. Looking back on my notes when I started listening through the candidates for the Spitfire Scholarship, my first reaction on hearing Haula’s songs: “staggeringly good - amazing voice, writing, lyrics, soul..” That kind of sums it up really!

Q & A with Haula

When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career in music?

I discovered music and the fact that I could hold a tune when I was about 14/15, and then fell completely in love with music, but not knowing how to go about it or whether it was possible for me to pursue a career. I just did it as a hobby. After I finished University with a Psychology degree, I decided to move to London in 2013 to chase the dream. At that point, I accepted that music was for me and started writing for open mics which turned into me writing my first song.

What or who are your main influences?

This would have to be Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Listening to their music/voices and hearing how honest they were in their artistry made me want to write my own material as an artist. I try to write from an honest place. I listen to a lot of Blues to inform my own writing style. In terms of contemporary music, I listen to is Beyoncé, Adele and pretty much anything pop, especially as I start writing for other artists.

What is your main instrument?

My main instrument would be voice, followed by piano. I am a vocalist first.

How are you finding your time at Tileyard so far?

I can honestly say I couldn’t have landed in a more perfect place. I’ve wanted to do a music course for a long time and this Commercial Songwriting course is perfect. I finally feel like a real musician, working with fellow musicians all pursuing our dreams. It’s the most musical and supportive environment, which is priceless! I love the songwriting classes and networking events/masterclasses. Just being here is an achievement in itself.

What are your aspirations after studying?

Touring the world, writing pop anthems, writing for artists and making a living from music. I really want to be a working and successful musician doing what I love and can do best.
